Dental implants are titanium posts that act as an artificial root. They are metal posts that are positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. They may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. Once in place, they allow replacement teeth to be mounted onto them. They can be used to replace single or multiple teeth. An important advantage of implants is that no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold your new replacement tooth/teeth in place.
Implants may also be used to stabilize dentures. Dentures and bridges mounted to implants won't slip or shift in your mouth. This secure fit helps the dentures and bridges — as well as individual crowns placed over implants — feel more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.
To receive dental implants, you need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. Excellent oral hygiene and routine dental visits are critical to the long-term success of dental implants. If you are a candidate for dental implants, our office will work closely with local board certified periodontists and/or oral surgeons to ensure a successful outcome.
